Fan Fav: Green Fairy Halloween Photos

I am slowly recovering from the madness of October and all the orders that came with it. I even managed to pick up and organize my studio, so that's telling you something. Despite the crazy hours and endless to-dos, I love what I do and appreciate all of my customers for their support and enthusiasm.

There is no end to my pleasure when I receive news that a purchase is exactly what was wanted and came out perfectly. I especially love when some little papoose is wearing her new creation, and you can just see from her smile that she loves it! This darling little papoose is wearing her Green Fairy Inspired Toddler Dress Outfit, and it looks like she had an amazing time with her friends and family on Halloween. Thank you, Kristin, for sharing these with me!

Fan Fav: Maroon Matey Tab Dress Vest and Chemise

My very talented cousin Megan is the photographer over at Imagine That Photography in Lake Charles, LA, and I was so excited when she fell in love with the Maroon Matey Tab Vest Dress and Chemise from the AW14 collection. She chose it to be the pirate costume for her little papoose this Halloween, and I love they way she styled and photographed the outfit. This picture is absolutely stunning, and I love how everything all came together!

Win of the Week: Natural Sand Polka Dot Magnolia Dress

It is national coffee day today, and I am terribly excited about indulging in a cup or two later on today! Hubbie and I usually have a little coffee break whenever he comes home from work just to unwind and talk about each other's day so I'll make sure the coffee is extra sweet today. It doesn't hurt when we have a few leftover donuts to go with our brew!

https://www.etsy.com/listing/205271750/win-of-the-week-natural-sand-polka-dot?ref=shop_home_active_1

But enough about coffee and onto the savings! This time around for the flash sale is the Natural Sand Polka Dot Magnolia Dress. I love this little dress because it has such beautiful neutral colors, which means it can be paired with any color. With temperatures slowly dropping, you can add your favorite tights and a cozy little sweater for the perfect outfit! It's inspired by the grace of classic magnolia trees that grow the official flower for the state of Louisiana so this sweet dress has all the charm and style for your southern little lady.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/205271750/win-of-the-week-natural-sand-polka-dot?ref=shop_home_active_1

The main fabric of the dress is cut from a cotton material with natural colorings of polka dots. Three magnolia petals are cut from a neutral cotton fabric with a lovely flower design and are appliqued to the front and back bodice. The same flower design fabric can be seen in the hidden side pockets and in the pleated belt that is sewn to the front and ties at the back into a big bow. An extra full skirt is the perfect for twirling, and the back closes with pearl buttons because every true southern girls deserves pearls.

Storybook Dress Up Reveal

If you remember from my last post, I briefly talked about the custom order I was working on for a little papoose who will be dressing up as Daisy-Head Mayzie for a special day at school. I would have loved to dress up as my favorite book character when I was young, but my school did not have such a fun day. It would have been difficult for me to pick a favorite character anyway, but that's beside the point.

Since I seemed to have missed this Dr. Seuss book when I was growing up, I did a little research and familiarized myself with the character. I need to stock up on my book collection, especially since I have a little one on the way and I don't own a copy of my favorite Dr. Seuss book, Go, Dog, Go. Like so many others, I loved looking at all the eccentric illustrations and characters depicted. I was able to quickly come up with a design I thought worked well in capturing the character while still infusing a little of me as a designer.

I took the flower theme and ran with it. Instead of a solid fabric piece collar, I cut and sewed a bunch of individual flower petals to go around the neckline and sleeves. The sleeves had to be puffy, of course, there's something so child-like and girly about them. The color palette really sets the tone of the dress in a pretty fuchsia with a rosy pink accent in the petals and the wraparound sash that ties dramatically into a large bow at the back.

I cut two tiers for the skirt for extra twirling power and to keep with the flower theme. I found the most perfect buttons that is like the icing on the cake really. I love the way it turned out, it is exactly as I pictured it in my head. I hope the little papoose has a wonderful time wearing it and feels just like her favorite book character when she plays dress up!

Storybook Dress Up

Awhile back I was contacted by an awesome mom who wanted her little papoose to have her favorite book character's dress made so she could wear it to school during a special dress up day. I loved the idea and jumped at the opportunity. Every little girl should have some dress up clothes to cultivate her imagination and give her confidence and a strong sense of self, I think it's as necessary as food and water. Obviously, I had tons of fun playing dress up as a child, even if all I had were my grandmother's old clothes from the 60's.

This little papoose enjoys reading Dr. Seuss' Daisy-Head Mayzie though, so she will be getting a custom made dress. Honestly, I'd never read nor heard of the book so I immediately sought it out, and it's a super charming story. I ran with the whole flower theme and designed a dress fairly similar to the one seen in the book with slight modifications. I will be finishing the final details soon and will post more pictures later, but I'm loving how it's turning out!

Fan Fav: Ruffle Neck Tunic Dress

With Starbucks announcing its Pumpkin Spice Latte is now available, that can only mean one thing: fall is coming! Summer is dwindling down, and my most favorite season will shortly be in full swing. I'm so excited, I actually thought about decorating a bit today, but that will have to wait until the hubby gets home so I don't overstrain myself with this growing baby bump. In the meantime, I have some adorable pictures from the cutest little papoose wearing her Ruffle Neck Tunic Dress and enjoying the last few days of summer in style! Thank you, Sonia, for sharing!

Autumn/ Winter 2014 Collection: Photo Shoot Preview

It was a beautiful day today on the gulf coast, and we thought we'd take advantage of the blessing before it got too hot with a mini photo shoot. The sun was a lot stronger than I had anticipated so some of my pictures were a little overexposed, and a certain little papoose's cheeks were getting very red so we stopped after experiencing any major meltdowns. I was able to catch this sassy little pose as she looked out at the horizon for any pirate ships, and I wanted to share it because it was just too perfect!

Autumn/ Winter 2014 Collection: Fabrics

I am back in the studio after a fun little weekend visiting with family, and I am anxious to tackle the rest of this collection. I am excited to see all the pieces completed, but I thought I'd give you a glimpse into the fabrics I chose. The colors are a lot darker and moodier than previous collections, but I love the way they are coming together with each individual piece of clothing.

I had seen this burgundy paisley fabric for awhile now. I actually used it for my own pirate costume when the hubby and I went to Disney World during Halloween a few years ago so it must have stuck in the back of my mind as I was deciding my color scheme. I knew I didn't want the typical red and black colors associated with pirate attire, but I did want some visual clues that are obviously pirate related like the black and white stripes and ruffled everything.

Here is a close up of one outfit I completed that really captures the look I'm going for. I think it says "sophisticated pirate" in a subtle enough way that still allows the clothing to be worn out and doesn't scream "costume, right here, COSTUME!" I love the brocade in the dark greys, it perfectly sets the tone while adding pattern and depth, and the front lace-up bow is so classic.

Autumn/ Winter 2014 Collection: Theme

I have a few pieces left to sew before this collection is finished, but I am super excited about what I've made so far. I showed some things to the hubby, and he said something along the lines of it being "really detailed" so I'm just going to take that as a good first impression. My sister and nieces will be down here soon so maybe I could take a picture or two as a little sneak peek into what I have in store for this new collection that you were hopefully able to get an idea or two from the inspiring images I posted last week.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_Bonny

So if you guessed pirate theme, you are correct! Actually, I prefer something along the lines of "sophisticated pirate" since it adds a sense of culture and refinement and not the boozy type of pirate. I'm really just reinventing the whole idea of what it means to be a pirate so that it suits my taste and aesthetic, but the underlying tone is still very much "pirate."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jolly_Roger

If you look closely at the pictures from last week, I am focusing mainly on moody tones with a pop of bright blue that is just too indicative of Caribbean waters to pass up. I didn't want the typical red and black look that so many people incorporate in their pirate clothing, so I went with more saturated tones that seem to have certain amount of age and mystery to them. The fabrics I chose look elegant and rich, not the kind one would want easily dirtied by tavern skirmishes.

http://goonies.wikia.com/wiki/File:Inferno.jpg

I don't know why I really wanted to do a pirate theme, I just easily settled on it. Maybe it has something to do with being absolutely obsessed with The Goonies from a very young age and watching it regularly that I have a slight attachment to the idea of a pirate adventure. Whatever the reason behind this collection, I am more than delighted with it so far and can't wait to share everything with you once it's completed!

Autumn/ Winter 2014: Inspiring Images

It may still be sizzling outside, but my mind is firmly fixated on cooler temperatures and the sound of crunching leaves. Fall has always been my absolute favorite season of the year, there are so many fun adventures to go on and delicious treats to sample. It's a bit of a shock though when I'm in this mindset and I open my front door to sweltering heat. I remedy this by pretty much staying indoors, and lately I've been working on the new Autumn/ Winter collection so I wanted to share some of the images that have been inspiring my work.

http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/a-look-inside-the-home-of-lighting-designer-marjorie-skourashouse-tour-169672

This incredible room belongs to Marjorie Skouras, a lighting designer who knows a thing or two about opulence! I love how rich the fabrics are, color-wise and texture, mixed with the different metals scattered throughout. It also has an accumulated feel that I like, as if everything in the room were collected over time after many adventures abroad.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/184019003/treasure-cave-photograph-art-print-or?ref=sr_gallery_3&ga_search_query=pirate+cave&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_view_type=gallery

There is so much going for this breathtaking picture by KieshaJean. The colors are sublime, and I absolutely want to dive right into that water and explore the riches of the sea. The rock face looks beautifully battered, but I'm a little leery of and intrigued by that cave opening.

http://christinemariedavis.com/Jewelry/ButtonJewelry/SmashedButtons.html

I would have never thought these were smashed buttons, but that's exactly what jewelry designer Christine Marie Davis uses to make her beautiful stacked charms. I love how aged and worn they look, each one has its own quirks and beauty. They definitely feel as if they have countless tales to tell.

Work in Progress: Kitchen Curtains

I think the nesting stage of this pregnancy has hit me because I want to do all the things I've been meaning to do since we moved in but couldn't from morning sickness. If I think about my mental list of things to do, I get overwhelmed easily, so I'm trying to stay focused on one or two projects at most. While hubby is currently in charge of fixing up the nursery, I am tackling the kitchen curtains.

It is a huge bay window that looks out onto the community pond so I'd love to make use of the view. The previous homeowners bought the cheap plastic shades that don't even fall the entire length of the window, so there is about a 10" gap where people can peek in if they wanted to. I decided café curtains would allow the light to come in but still give enough privacy.

http://kokka-fabric.com/en/inspiration/inspiration-file-08/

I searched for hours on Pinterest and finally fell in love with an inspiration photo I knew I could tackle. Made from modern laces, designer Angelica Leaf is the mastermind behind these incredibly gorgeous patchwork curtains. I love how romantic and shabby chic they are while still allowing the light to shine through. I knew I could find what I needed in my stash so I went on a fabric and lace hunt.

Of course, I had a particular helper throughout the afternoon who somehow managed to look adorable while hindering the sewing process.

So far I have about half of the window done so it shouldn't take long to finish this little project. I'm liking the way it's turning out and how the squares aren't all the same sizes, having a more organic feel to them. I can't wait to finally hang them up and see how it all looks!

You Choose Options

I have been receiving a lot of questions about whether or not I would be willing to use a different fabric choice on some of my more popular designs. I absolutely love working with clients to get them exactly what they want, so in an attempt to make things a bit easier, I decided to list some pieces in the Etsy shop where you can automatically choose the fabric you want. I'm hoping this makes it easier and more convenient, and who doesn't like options?

https://www.etsy.com/listing/179082487/animal-print-ruffle-top-bloomer-bubble?ref=shop_home_active_1

These adorable little shorts are still one of the more popular designs I have in the shop, even after all the years. I love how sassy and playful they are without being taken too seriously. They can be dressed up or down depending on accessories, and they are incredibly cute and comfortable on with elasticized waist and leg openings. Leopard print will always be a classic, but I thought it would be fun to dive right into all the fun animal prints available!

https://www.etsy.com/listing/177553333/customizable-ruffle-neck-long-sleeve?ref=shop_home_active_3

This classic blouse has so much vintage charm without being too stuffy or outdated, and I love the buttons down the back to create a crisp look for the front. Puff sleeves are a must, and the sweet ruffle details seen at the collar and wrists set off the look perfectly. Of course this can be made in any solid color fabric one would need, but I listed the four most frequently asked color options.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/177555055/customizable-extra-full-girls-ruffle-top?ref=shop_home_active_4

Similar to the blouse, this darling skirt is so classic and charming in the denim blue that I felt more options should be used to showcase how versatile it can be. With hidden side pockets to collect found treasures and a sweet ruffled waistline, this skirt can be worn anytime and anywhere. With all the basic colors as popular options, this skirt is truly a closet essential for the budding fashionista!

https://www.etsy.com/listing/105744773/customizable-tiered-pom-pom-dress-by?ref=shop_home_active_2

My most requested dress design to be made in a specific color, which I am only too happy to oblige! I love finding a new color and seeing it come to life in this incredibly adorable dress that is full of fun pom poms and girlish style. Originally designed to be part of the Fairytale Collection, this dress seems to strike a chord with moms and daughters alike, so I wanted to officially create a listing where all you have to do is mention the color you want. Leave the rest to me!

Kaetoo Interview

I am not ready to spill the beans on the theme for the upcoming Autumn/ Winter collection, but I will say I will be watching a particular favorite childhood movie of mine and getting inspiration as soon as I finish this entry. I am so giddy about this collection, I think it is going to be lots of fun with tons of sass! I just need to gather my drawing supplies and brainstorm a bit, but my husband has the infamous "Man Fever." This is a bit like the frightening "Man Cold" without all the other symptoms. I made him some vegetable soup and tucked him into bed for a nap with all the necessities within reach so maybe I'll have some time to work before he wakes up.

http://kaetoo.blogspot.com.au/2014/06/materials-and-techniques-papoose.html

Meanwhile the lovely Kate from Kaetoo blog and Etsy shop has written up a beautiful interview featuring yours truly on her blog, and it was fun to answer the questions for her Materials and Techniques series. You can also find more featured creators on her blog through this series so go check her out if you want to be inspired by fellow artists!

Coming Soon

There will be some changes coming soon to the shop depending on certain upcoming circumstances. I have been so incredibly busy lately that I've neglected a few areas, but hopefully the winds are changing and I can get back into my routine. I've been with my sister for the past few weeks as she adjusts to life with two children, and it's been fun spending time with my new niece and delving into all things baby. I've also been learning new tricks and techniques, which will come in handy real soon...

That's right, there will be a little papoose coming in November, and I'm excited to start this journey. I don't know what the sex is yet, so I can't say whether or not I'll have a new model for the shop. Even if it's a boy, I still have my two adorable little nieces who are perfectly qualified for the job! Now that I'm feeling SO much better, I can actually think about working on the Autumn/ Winter 2014 collection, which I need to get started on as soon as possible so I don't fall any further behind schedule!

Work in Progress: Coronation Ball Gown

I have been terribly busy churning out four new items for the Fairytale Collection, and I couldn't be happier with the way they've turned out! I already revealed the Blue Pinafore Dress a few weeks ago, and I am excited to give some small glimpses into my process with a certain coronation ball gown I was given the opportunity to create for a special little princess.

The Queen Mother who commissioned me for this particular wardrobe wanted something fairly specific, so I took all of her wants and added some of my ideas. I came up with a little front bow detail to liven up the bodice, but that was scratched after some further discussion. The colors were to be a dark teal, golden yellow, and deep purple/ blue, almost black.

I loved how the colors looked when they finally came together on the dress. Since this was a custom made item, I used the little princess' measurements to create a one-of-a-kind ball gown that I hope she loves to dance around in!

Feature Friday: Nature | City

Whenever I'm asked what's one of the hardest things about having an Etsy shop, I usually say the photography. It seems so easy to point and click, but there is so much to be said in only five provided slots that you need to capture the essence of the product and all its quirky little details. Photography is so important to online shopping because buyers can't touch and see the item in real life, yet so many people think they can do it. I freely admit I don't know as much as I should, I definitely wouldn't call myself a photographer, but there's something about taking out a camera and capturing the world around you.

One person who does this beautifully, is Brandt from Nature | City. I have been admiring his work for awhile, and I was excited about the opportunity to interview him. From his travels abroad in Asia to his home state of Florida, there is an amazing depth and life to the places he captures. He offers prints of his original works, but you can also purchase decorative and fashion items like throw pillows, wall clocks, tote bags, and even shower curtains.

https://www.etsy.com/shop/NatureCity?ref=l2-shopheader-name

1. How do you define art?
I like to think of art like storytelling. When I look at art, I look for it to convey meaning to me. What can it tell me about itself as much as possible without the artist giving the story of their inspiration or explanation behind its purpose or meaning to me first? This allows me to go in many different directions with my imagination on it. There is no constriction towards possibilities endless, if that makes sense.

2. How would you describe your art?
I’ve always loved photography. Even when not taking a picture, I find myself drawn towards the work of others. In it, I look for a sense of belonging. Take for example a landscape photograph. I want to imagine myself in it, as if I’m living amongst the work. I try and do the same for viewers with my own work. Whether it’s a landscape or other subject matter, I hope that the viewer is able to make a connection with it similar to the connections I make with it.

3. Name three adjectives that describe your artistic point of view.
Moody, inspiring, and awe striking? I know there’s more. I figured the first three that came off the top of my head would work!

https://www.etsy.com/shop/NatureCity?ref=l2-shopheader-name

4. Who has most personally influenced and inspired you as an artist?
I’ve been a lover of movies even before I first used a camera; especially the cinematographic element involved in that medium of storytelling. Film Noir and Sci Fi movies, like Blade Runner and Brazil, were always big inspirations to me when imagining a world through imagery. That sort of dystopian future setting always interested me in attempting to tip my hat towards that through my own photography. However, as my inspirations have changed, so too has my work.

5. Has your artistic sensibility changed since you first began?
Absolutely! Like mentioned before, as an artist who also operates as an entrepreneur, the buyer’s market can play a vital role in that decision making process for me. There are a plethora of images I have photographed over the years that I absolutely love, yet have never translated over well to a potential buying audience. In looking to cater to meet those needs, my work has changed somewhat, influenced by the demand and interest of my own audience (and potential visitors).

6. What inspires your art?
Just as in my response to question 4, I’m influenced heavily by the cinematic realm of storytelling. I love for art to convey meaning through storytelling to me. Sometimes, when words can’t seem to do it, like in an otherwise complicated book, a picture (or moving picture) helps.

https://www.etsy.com/shop/NatureCity?ref=l2-shopheader-name

7. Do you have a favorite artist from another field?
David Fincher, as a film director, perhaps? He has a sort of gritty and dark way of storytelling through his movies, where as a viewer, I know what to expect with each piece he puts out. He creates this dark and moody world that I love escaping to as a viewer, even if only for a few hours. Movies such as Se7en, Fight Club, and The Social Network, all had this similar dark visual feel incorporated, that helped to create this mood of a black, cold world, no matter the premise of the story. Regardless of mainstream influence or pressure, he seems to stick to the same backbone visually that brought him in to it. I admire that!

8. Who is your favorite competitor from your field?
I’m not certain I have one in particular. I do follow the work of others more successful and longstanding than myself (and mostly to get a better sense of how it is that they have come to their own levels of success). However, I feel that I’m mostly in competition with myself?

Personally, I set a high bar in anything that I do: one, to avoid complacency with any success, small or big, and two, to continue driving towards a level of craftsmanship that can still leave me surprised by the end results.

As the saying goes, “you’re only as good as your next performance”! I think that complacency can become a very depressing thing if you believe that this is the best work you can give. I think it’s important to keep developing in your craft, no matter what it is that you do. As influences change, so too should your work?

9. Do you have any occupation hazards or mishaps?
Not necessarily any hazards. But more like war stories?

This is a memory that I will never let go of (or even get over, for that matter). It involved a week long trek through Thailand (I was on vacation) while living and working as a teacher in South Korea.

Anyways, the night I arrived to the hostel I was to stay at in Bangkok, I made a last second decision to switch out the hand strap of my camera for the neck strap, teething with anticipation to walk through the street markets my first night in (after checking in and dropping my luggage). Impatiently, I rigged the camera strap together, unknowingly unsecured, and hurriedly bolted for the staircase leading down and out to the street. Letting the camera dangle freely from my neck (and not bracing it with my hand), it flew free from the strap and shattered in to pieces as it made its way down the stairs.

Needless to say, I spent all of my vacation attempting to fix my camera, enough to the point that I could muster at least some sense of visuals to help explain my exotic experience in Thailand. Thankfully, I managed to get several worthy shots of this beautiful country, yet not as many of particular places of interest to capture during my short time and travel there that I had experienced.

I’d have to say it’s on my bucket list of places to visit (or revisit [and reshoot]), with more preventative measures set in place for myself next time. I’m a bit clumsy, by nature. Ha ha!

https://www.etsy.com/shop/NatureCity?ref=l2-shopheader-name

10. What did you wish you would have known when starting out?
That I should have devoted my education to my art instead of two degrees in non-related fields? My mindset was different back then, especially in the days when running a business online was seemingly non-existent. From that perspective, it was hard to say with any certainty that I could make some sort of living as an artist outside of my own local market, especially without the tools available to build an international following to my work. So instead, I grinded it out in the academic world, and spent the past several years in the field of education, before realizing that I was meant to do what I’ve been doing now the whole time.

With that, I can happily say to others, who are thinking of leaving the working world of a job they may loathe, that it’s never too late to pursue your own happiness, even if it’s a slow roll (which it is) for the first couple of years. I managed to balance both before my work involved with operating this started to pick up to the point that I struggled setting time aside for my job, which led me to walk away from it completely as a result, and now focus solely on this. Also, with the way that the job market continues to be an unsteady ship, I find more of a sense of security in operating my own business.

At the end of the day, I’m more at peace with myself for doing what I do now (even if for the moment, I earn only a fraction of what I did before when employed). As an artist and business person, it’s become more gratifying to me in as opposed to being an ambitious yet underappreciated and underutilized employee in the workforce.

I’m sure everyone’s experience is different, however. This is just how it’s come to be for me.

11. What is your favorite item currently for sale in your shop?
My Wall Clocks! I work alongside a manufacturer to help with the production and completion of Wall Clocks that feature my photography as the centerpiece or focal point as part of the design process. I was a bit skeptical at first of the sample images showing what the final pieces would look like. But once receiving them in hand, I was really taken aback by how sleek and modern they looked. Aside from offering them to customers for purchasing, I proudly hang one from the walls of my home office as well!

12. Who is your favorite author? What was your favorite book as a child?
I don’t necessarily have a favorite author, by any means. I’m more so drawn to a great piece of literature that can pull me in to the world of its words for a few hours here and there. But going back to films, there are some really great reads I like to revisit now and then, such as No Country For Old Men by Cormack McCarthy, and Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. Even though both were made in to movies, the books are still just as good!

13. When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
An illustrator? I spent a good majority of my time outside of school while growing up, introverted and locked away in my room, drawing sketch upon sketch, regardless if on lined notebook paper or other. It was just sort of something I enjoyed doing. What drew me away from it was when I got in to photography; I’m not sure why I never went back to illustration, honestly. But in a way, both were a great medium for storytelling. I just eventually leaned towards having more of an interest with photography in the end.

14. Where is the farthest you have travelled? Where did you dream about visiting as a child?
I had the opportunity to live and work abroad in South Korea in 2009. Before that, any travel was limited to road trips within the United States. I had a great fear of flights (still do), but circumstances in my life at that time made me leap, uncaringly, as far as Asia without thinking twice. As a child, I wanted to go everywhere that magazines like National Geographic and such introduced me to while growing up. I still do, actually!

15. Which musician or musical group inspires you the most? What was your favorite childhood song?
I’m not big in to music, actually. I do however like to listen to something experimental or meditative from time to time. I can go as deep as an industrial sound, or light as an ambient track of white noise. I incur a lot of self-inflicted stress on myself, and it’s a great release to have to help bring my mind back to a sense of equilibrium.

16. Where can people find you and your art online?
I just recently launched my own dot com site, as I was eager to grow independently outside of being hosted on a market site, such as Etsy. I can be found here at www.naturecity.co, even though I still spend a great deal of time on Etsy with my brand and business. I’m hoping that a migration leads people to my website though as well, so I can eventually focus entirely on that.

Ice Princess Inspired Blue Pinafore Dress

It feels like the past few weeks since we've moved into the new house have been a whirlwind of comings and goings. I still have a few boxes left to unpack, but we spent the weekend hanging pictures and artwork and generally making it feel more like home. I haven't been able to paint any room in the house yet, which is bothering me, but I think all that will have to wait awhile though. The colors aren't terrible, so at least they're not begging to be painted, it's just not what I would have chosen. Granted, the studio still has the original groovy paneling from the 70s, and that will be the first room that gets a makeover!

I have been sewing up new dresses lately and was especially eager about certain pinafore ones. I wanted to share the newest creation in the Fairytale Collection, the Ice Princess Inspired Blue Pinafore Dress and Blouse. I was excited about this little dress because it seemed like a simple but charmingly quaint design that is super wearable. I want my creations to enliven imaginations and make little princesses feel really special and excited to wear them while keeping all the Queen Mothers unashamed to be seen with them in public without all the gaudy frou frou some costumes have.

I love the way it turned out. I began by making the dress first, which is lovely because it can be worn by itself or with the darling little blouse underneath. I added a simple maroon trim that I made with my favorite little bias tape machine around the neckline, armholes, and hemline. A sweet little ruffle also adds a bit of whimsy to the edges as well, which didn't take as long as I thought it would.

The cinched belt sash is so darling with its gathered front detail, and of course, gotta have the big bow in the back. I cut the back down into a deep square neck, and I love the way it turned out. There are hidden side pockets too to keep those frozen hands warm or for stuffing found treasures in when going on an adventure.

Like I mentioned before, the blouse can also be worn with the dress or by itself for the beginning of a sweet vintage look with its little collar and banded puff sleeves. I love the simplicity of a little girl's shirt that buttons down the back. It all comes together so well, and the colors are so vibrant and girly without being too childish.
